T-Connect is a software assistant, which allows to design, compute and draw execution plans of the connections of steel structures. This software can be used directly in Tricalc, making use of its tools to design steel structures. T-Connect can also be used as an independent software to design connections, while another program is being used to compute the members of the mentioned previously joints.

When configuring T-Connect, it is possible to define the geometry with Tricalc, whose files could be recovered by T-Connect. It is also possible to define directly internal forces and sections of members with T-Connect to only compute the connections between members.

T-Connect is supplied with a database of customizable connections, which could be used on joints of steel structures. Users can also design new connection types and add them to the database.

The software assistant allows to define every part of the connection step-by-step. The allowed connection types are beam-column connection, beam-beam connection, column-column connection and hollow profiles connection.

When a customizable connection is selected from the database, a tool allows to select the joints of the structure, so they can be designed with this connection type.

Connection types

The beam-column connection is only allowed for I-shaped sections. These connections can be done by welded column webs, by column webs with welded angle cleat, by welded column flanges, by column flanges with welded angle cleat or by column flanges with bolted extreme plate.

The beam-beam connection includes these types: welded connection of confronted beams, leveled welded connection of not confronted beams, not leveled welded connection of not confronted beams, bolted connection of confronted beams, leveled connection of not confronted beams using a bolted plate and not leveled connection of not confronted beams using a bolted plate.

The hollow profiles connections are available for rectangular and circular sections with T-shaped, Y-shaped, K-shaped, N-shaped, X-shaped and KT-shaped joint types.

Connection calculations are based on the Eurocode-3 and rule EN 1993-1-8:2005, which contains the verifications that must be check.

Internal forces

To use T-Connect as an independent software or as a tool inside Tricalc, internal forces (moments and forces) should be defined to check connections. It is possible to recover internal forces combinations, which should be used in computations, with MS-Excel.

If T-Connect is used as a component inside Tricalc, internal forces combinations can be obtained automatically to use them in the connections computations.

Connection-stiffness calculation. Obtaining moment-rotation graph

Moment-rotation graph shows the connection stiffness. This kind of graph links the acting moments in connections with the relative rotation generated between connected members and joints, in relation to the starting situation (no internal forces). These stiffness values can be used in internal-forces computations and graphs can also be defined on connections.



Auxiliary components: bolts, extreme plates and stiffeners

In any connection is possible to use different auxiliary components such as bolts, extreme plates and stiffeners. Bolts are defined by their type and diameter, choosing bolts from the included metrics (ISO-EN or ASTM). There are available welded extreme plates in beams and half-profile bracket-plates in lower/upper flange of beams, which can be inserted and computed also as a member bracket-plate. In columns webs it is allowed the use of horizontal and oblique stiffeners, web plates and back-plates in bolted areas.

Welding

Every welding of the connections will be computed, as much weldings of members as weldings of auxiliary components. The standard nomenclature used in drawings is the one used in ANSI/AWS rule and EN 22553:1994 rule.

Connections report

There is included the needed information to justify the suitability of each designed connection. Reports include internal forces and maximal obtained stresses, following the verifications on the EC-3 code. Every auxiliary components of each connection are also included in reports.

Drawings

For each joint a scaled drawing can be obtained, which includes 2 front views and top view, that shows the needed dimensions of extreme plates, bolts and stiffeners. Weldings are also included in drawings, specifying the welding type, execution (workshop or in situ) and dimensions.

When T-Connect is used as a tool inside Tricalc, the locations of each type of connection in the structure are done with location plans on every joint.
